It’s a woman’s right to choose: A Christian looks at the debate

I hear my brothers and sisters crying out for justice while the Republican Taliban machine churns out a message denying women the right to choose whether to carry a child full term into independent life. The Republican’s are clearly in the wrong when they say they would outlaw and criminalize abortions. It ultimately is the woman’s choice and may no man thwart that truth.

In my heart and in my Bible, the truth rings out: God is decidedly pro-life. But that truth also goes along with the truth that God gives us free will, to live life on this earth as we see fit. Yes, we must follow and adhere to the laws in this country. And, if we don’t agree with the law, then our democracy provides us with ways to change it. So, all of this arguing for abortion in the case of rape, incest, or the life of the mother is incorrectly used in the discussion for allowing abortion in the sense of making it legal or illegal.

Nobody has the right to tell a woman what to do with her body. Never is it alright to do so. We do not live in a theocracy, thank God for that. In this country, we are indeed a nation of laws, but not God’s law. Never have been and I hope we never will be.

I’m certain, that in most people’s heart, they would rather see a child born and not have its life terminated by abortion. It’s only natural that we feel this way. Many Christians miss this point, they think our country can dictate what set of moral laws to live by, but the fact is, we can’t do that. As a nation, we must keep the right for people to choose their path in life. As Christians, believers must recognize that our government is not here to fall back on in case of moral failure. That’s not the government’s job or place.

Christians win hearts by loving God and loving others, in spite of the decisions others make in their lives. The truth is that God loves us all, 100% of the time. Not just some of us, but all of us. And, He is a God of second chances. While it is true that many women who have gone through with abortions find out later they have issues with regret and anger, we, as Christians, can only offer our love and well placed words of encouragement and understanding. We should never try to legislate morality, because it never works. The only thing that does work is God’s love working through His people to reach out to love and help others.

I hope God’s word of love reaches the hearts of the Republican Taliban in this country and gives them a chance to soften their stance and outlook toward women. It’s all we have to go on. That, and of course, prayer.
